Newsela is a great website that provides interesting and current articles for free. What is most interesting about this resource is that the student, parent, or teacher can select the appropriate lexile level for each article to suit the individual reader. There are also online quizzes provided to check comprehension.
Room for Debate, is a site created by the New York Times. The Times invites knowledgeable outside contributors to discuss news events and other timely issues. They welcome feedback from readers. Reader comments are moderated Monday through Friday. This site provides multiple perspectives on a single issue.
Longreads is a website that provides links to longer articles taken from various magazines (i.e. The New Yorker, Washington Post, Mother Jones, Wired, Rolling Stone, etc.). This is an ideal resource for honors and A.P. students, and it can be a welcome challenge to other high school students who look to challenge themselves.
